Le Bon Truc (The Good Stuff) is Gary Chapin (diatonic accordion), Steve Gruverman (clarinet) and Barbara Truex, (dulcimer, banjo uke, and percussion). Between them they have decades of experience playing world and folk music, with a particular passion for the music of rural France and Brittany. After playing together in the French dance band, Nouveau Chapeau, they realized that as a trio of accordion, reeds, and dulcimer, they had something unique and special to offer. Between their sound, their energy, and their repertoire, they guarantee to make any room happy. They often expand to a quartet with singer Joëlle Morris during the non-summer seasons.

Steve Gruverman plays various woodwinds in a variety of styles but especially loves the ethnic dance music of Europe, from Brittany to Bulgaria. His travels have included several trips to different parts of France to study folk dance and music in their native milieu. On his first trip there he was delighted to discover that the clarinet is an authentic Breton folk instrument, affectionately known as the “treujenn-gaol” or “cabbage stalk”! Steve is also a member of the Casco Bay Tummlers (Portland’s long-time Klezmer band) and Spoonmaker’s Diamond.

Gary Chapin plays diatonic button accordions and writes a blog for French music enthusiasts athttp://accordeonaire.blogspot.com/. Gary began playing diatonic accordion when he discovered the music of Sylvain Piron, Frédéric Paris, and Daniel Thonon. Since then he has been obsessed by the repertoire of Centre France, Brittany, and Alsace, and obsessed by the accordion – a very very clever instrument, indeed. Last year Gary released a CD, L’Autre Diatoniste, which is available at http://garychapin.bandcamp.com/.

Barbara Truex is recognized as an innovator for her use of the dulcimer in jazz, pop, free improvisational music as well as international music, folk and otherwise. She has extensive experience working with dance and theater ensembles, both as a composer and on stage musical accompanist. As a recording artist Barbara has been involved with many projects for other artists as well as her own solo and group releases. She currently performs with other groups including The Maine Squeeze Accordion Ensemble and Spoonmaker’s Diamond and hosts a Wednesday morning world music program on WMPG-FM.
